Biography
Juan Saez Corales was a veteran Puerto Rican labor leader and Communist, a candidate for the island's House of Representatives, who campaigned under the slogan 'Jail, no; Congress, yes' while under indictment in Puerto Rico's first Smith Act case. He was one of the eleven defendants tried in San Juan in 1956.
Dávila Marichal reports that police detained Juan Sáez Corales and Consuelo Burgos at their Hato Rey home at about 3:30 a.m. on November 2, 1950. The account describes four and a half days in custody with their children. This is a distinct 1950 detention and does not replace the existing 1954 prosecution.
