Biography

Juan Espinoza Martinez was arrested on October 6, 2025 after federal prosecutors accused him of offering money to kill Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino. A jury acquitted him on January 22, 2026, but immigration authorities immediately detained him again. A federal judge later ruled that his continued detention without a bond hearing was unlawful.

On February 6, 2026 the Southern District of Indiana granted habeas relief concerning his Clay County Jail detention and required an individualized immigration bond hearing or release by February 11 at 5 p.m., with a compliance report due February 13. The order did not establish that he was actually released on either date. Its opening page says ICE arrested him January 22, whereas its background says the day after his January 22 acquittal; that internal one-day discrepancy is retained rather than treated as a new confirmed endpoint.
