Biography
John Shoemaker was a San Francisco longshore strike-committee member whom police took to the station on a rioting accusation during the 1934waterfront strike. Bruce Minton’s account reports a sixty-day sentence and criticizes the first defense lawyer for preventing workers’ self-defense testimony. No exact arrest or release day or completion of the nominal term is supplied. His strike committee identity is distinct from Joseph Shoemaker’s later Tampa political-organizing case. The July 9 Western Worker describes John Shoemaker, the young strike-committee member introduced as Delaney, arrested and beaten mercilessly by a mounted policeman while leading a picket line. This corroborates the existing waterfront-strike case without a new exact custody endpoint. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/westernworker/1934/v3-n27-31-jul-1934.pdf#page=4
