Biography

John Metsaranta, printed in Finnish inflected form Metsärannan, was a janitor at the San Francisco Finnish workers hall. A1946 local labor-history recollection places his arrest during repression surrounding the1934 general strike: police took him while he was locking the hall, brought him to a police station and beat him. The account explicitly reports seven days in a cell on allegations of disturbing the peace and assembling on a street corner, while disputing those allegations because he had been seized at the hall. Exact arrest and discharge days are not supplied.
