Biography

The July 9 Western Worker prints a June 22 Brentwood dispatch naming John Funkner among eight apricot strikers arrested June 21 in connection with strike leadership. A delegation led by William Prater and backed by the Cannery and Agricultural Workers Industrial Union and ILD obtained their release after a protest at county officials’ office. Funkner is identified as the Communist state-senate candidate in Sacramento. The report gives no exact physical discharge day or formal count; the paragraph identifies this Brentwood strike event rather than an immigration detention.
