Biography

John Babbitt, thirty-six, was secretary of the Fort Scott Farmer-Labor Union. The January 18 report says police arrested him January 17 and held him without a charge or visitors after the preceding evening’s courthouse relief protest. It separately recalls his arrest weeks earlier for refusing to leave the courthouse, on a peace-disturbance accusation with $1,000 bond and a January 28 trial planned. The earlier arrest and January 17 detention are separate episodes; neither proposed trial nor the police attack supplies a physical release or complete custody total.
