Biography

George Bankhead was a member of the CIO-affiliated International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers prosecuted after the 1937 union conflict in Galena, Kansas. Union members were accused of firing on Blue Card organization members who attempted to disrupt a union meeting. Bankhead was charged with first-degree murder and appeared with fellow defendants in a photograph published on April 30, 1937. One of those wounded, Lavoice Miller, died.

Contemporary Galena photograph

The original caption calls Lavoice Miller one of the nine wounded, not a defendant. The biography’s unsupported word “defendants” has been removed; the caption does not establish an individual booking or discharge date.
