Biography
Joe McCarthy was an organizer and delegate for the Lumber Workers Industrial Union in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Joe McCarthy was convicted at the mass IWW trial in Chicago, sentenced to five years in prison and fined $30,000. He sewed in the Cook County Jail and Leavenworth Penitentiary from December 1917 to August 1918 and from September 1918 to June 13, 1922.
The March1920 One Big Union Monthly roster identifies Joe McCarty and reports: Federal. Indicted Chicago September28,1917. Conspiracy to violate Sections6,19and37 and Section4 of the Espionage Act. The March1922 official report lists Joe McCarty in List1 of convicted prisoners or parolees. The government entry reports Conspiracy and violating the espionage act, etc. a sentence of August 30, 1918, 5 years Leavenworth Penitentiary; fine $20,000.. Imposed terms, projected term-expiration dates, parole eligibility and intervals on bond are different measures; none is entered as a complete actual custody total.
