Biography
Joan Bird was a 19-year-old nursing student and Black Panther Party member when she was arrested on January 17, 1969 in connection with a Harlem incident in which NYPD officers exchanged gunfire with three men in a car; she was beaten in custody and the photograph of her bruised face became one of the most widely circulated images of the case. She was charged in the April 2, 1969 Panther 21 indictment as one of two women among the defendants (the other was Afeni Shakur) and was held at the Womens House of Detention in Greenwich Village on $100,000 bail. She was one of the 13 defendants who went to trial and was acquitted with the others on May 13, 1971.
The Black Panther reported that Joan Bird (printed Byrd) and Afeni Shakur were returned to maximum-security confinement on February 8, 1971 after Michael Tabor and Richard Moore failed to appear in the Panther 21 trial. In a first-person account published June 27, 1970, Bird distinguished her January 1969 detention from the later Panther 21 imprisonment. She described about two weeks in the Women's House of Detention before release on bail, a rearrest on attempted-robbery allegations the following day, a second release on bail, and a new arrest on April 2. She reported continued confinement for more than fourteen months after that arrest. The approximate January duration does not establish an exact release date.
The contemporary report places Bird’s initial arrest at about 9 p.m. on January 17, 1969 and says that Judge Tyler initially held her as a material witness at a January 18 appearance. It reports later arraignment on assault with intent to murder and two attempted-murder counts, with $10,000 bail. The article alleges beating, threats and interrogation overnight. Its clock-time references and stated elapsed detention do not align clearly, so no exact arraignment time or measured custody total is inferred. The $10,000 bail belongs to this January account and is distinct from the later Panther 21 bail.
