Biography

Jessie Ward worked in the Illinois Black Panther Party’s education cadre. Arrested in the June 4, 1969 FBI raid on the Chicago headquarters, he was released on a signature bond. He was detained again on June 8 during a police stop of a group of Panthers, held overnight, and released on bond the next morning.

The June 12, 1969 FBI report at PDF page 179 individually names Jessie Ward among eight people arrested during the early-morning June 4 search of Chicago Black Panther headquarters, accused of harboring George Sams Jr. It states that all appeared before the United States Commissioner and were released on bond that same day. Page 156 identifies Commissioner James T. Balog, recognizance release and $3,000 bond for the female defendants. The June 20 hearing was scheduled, not a proven later disposition. This June 4 event is separate from the existing June 8–9 detention. No overnight custody or numerical duration is added.
