Biography

Jessie Lawrence was a Black youth beaten by four Washington, D.C. policemen and imprisoned in the Occoquan Jail. The October 20 report describes a five-minute trial on disorderly-conduct and resisting-an-officer charges, resulting in thirty-five days. The International Labor Defense and lawyers P. H. Harris and J. Levine were seeking his freedom and organizing an October 23 protest demanding release. The article challenges the accusation; it does not report physical discharge or total service.
