Biography
Jerry Mehalovich was an Iowa peace activist and draft-registration resister. In 1980 he joined other Iowa resisters in burning draft cards and later withheld his Social Security number when registering as a protest against conscription. Mehalovich entered Offutt Air Force Base during the Feast of the Holy Innocents peace witness on December 28, 1981. Military authorities detained him for several hours, issued a barring letter, and released him that day.
Two separate temporary military detentions
Nuclear Resister issue 10, page 3, explicitly names Jerry Mehalovich among the December 28, 1981 Offutt activists taken into military custody and released after several hours with barring letters. Admission now records that temporary detention, not entry to prison. The same-day elapsed-day counter does not imply no custody. Original issue 10, page 3.
In his own account, Steve Jacobs names Mehalovich among seven participants in an August 1984 SAC recreation-island occupation. They were taken to the military police building, processed and released; charges were subsequently dropped. This separate episode is recorded at month precision only, with no invented exact day or jail sentence. The article's images are illustrations, not identified photographs of Mehalovich, and are not imported as portraits. Participant's original account.
