Biography
Jeremy Busby is a Texas prison journalist, activist and former staff writer for The Echo. Columbia Journalism Review reported in March 2025 that he alleged repeated retaliation through solitary confinement, transfers and restrictions on communication. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice denied retaliating and said transfers may reflect medical, classification or program needs. His original imprisonment arose from a 75-year homicide sentence imposed in 1999; his description of the incident as self-defense is his account, not an exoneration. In a first-person Freedom of the Press Foundation essay, Busby reported 23 months in solitary after participating in reporting about prison COVID policies. That alleged additional confinement is distinct from his original criminal sentence. His reporting and organizing continue through Freedom of the Press Foundation and JoinJeremy. Precise start and end dates of the reported retaliatory confinement are not established in the reviewed sources.
Verified detail sources (October 9, 2026): Solitary Watch’s contributor biography explicitly identifies Jeremy Busby as the first Black staff writer for The ECHO and uses he/him. The identity matches the Texas writer and reported journalism-retaliation case. His original homicide sentence is separate from that case. Source 1.
