Biography
Jason Renard Walker is an incarcerated journalist and author who has exposed violence and alleged official misconduct in Texas prisons. In February 2023, PEN America announced that he had been granted protective safekeeping after reporting-related threats and attacks. PEN welcomed the safety measure while warning that its isolation endangered his health. The Texas Observer reported in April 2023 that he had been imprisoned in TDCJ since 2008, transferred more than ten times after his 2018 reporting on synthetic drugs, and confined alone in protective safekeeping at Powledge. That historical location should not be read as his current placement. Scalawag’s author biography accompanying 2026 work identifies him as incarcerated and supplies a Joe Corley Processing Center contact. His original state imprisonment and anticipated additional federal sentence are separate from the journalism-related safety case; a scheduled state release is not proof of release from all custody.
