Biography
Page 3's October 30 St. Louis dispatch identifies James Johnson as a local Black worker sentenced to life imprisonment on a rape charge characterized by the labor defense campaign as a frame-up. Organized labor was raising funds for an appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court at a Sunday benefit at the Labor Center, 1223 North Leonard Avenue, also supporting Angelo Herndon. The statutory charge, individual arrest and sentencing dates, institution and final disposition are not supplied. This Missouri defendant is kept distinct from the Everett IWW and Minneapolis namesakes. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1935/v12-n263-NAT-oct-31-1935-DW-Q.pdf
