Biography

Horace Heffren was an attorney at Salem, Washington County, Indiana, and a leader of the Sons of Liberty. Federal military authorities detained him during the 1864 Indianapolis treason proceedings alongside Lambdin P. Milligan, William A. Bowles, Stephen Horsey and Andrew Humphreys. The official trial record identifies him by his own sworn testimony and states that the government withdrew proceedings against him and released him from arrest before he became a prosecution witness in November 1864. American Bastile prints his surname as Heffner. Exact physical arrest and release dates are left unspecified.
