Biography
Harry Jackson was a Maritime Workers Industrial Union organizer prosecuted for vagrancy during San Francisco’s July 1934 crackdown on labor activists. The Western Worker reported his conviction and that he was out on bail while appealing it; a November 2 appeal hearing was postponed without a new date.
Daily Worker, August 23, 1934, page 2: The San Francisco continuation identifies him as the Marine Workers’ Industrial Union organizer sentenced to six months for vagrancy and out on $1,000 bond pending appeal. No sentencing day or actual duration served is supplied.
Page 1 identifies the Marine Workers Industrial Union West Coast organizer as just convicted of vagrancy. It quotes the accusation that he went from place to place without lawful business, presents this as repression of union organizing, and reports ILD attorney Leo Gallagher’s intended appeal. This corroborates the existing San Francisco vagrancy case rather than the separate Birmingham TUUL organizer. No new sentencing or custody endpoint is established. The January 31 San Francisco report announces appellate reversal of the vagrancy convictions of Harry Jackson, Elaine Black and Joseph Wilson from the 1934 strike crackdown. It says the convictions rested solely on Communist Party membership rather than proof of vagrancy. This is the maritime organizer’s existing case, not that of the Birmingham TUUL organizer; no physical release date follows from the reversal.
