Gertrude Murphy
Biography
Gertrude Murphy was born about 1891 and was a member of the National Woman's Party jailed twice during the 1917-1919 campaign for woman suffrage. Her exact dates of birth and death are unresolved. (Recorded as Gertrude E. Murphy; later Gertrude Murphy Schneller and also spelled Sneller)
On January 16, 1919 she was sentenced to twenty-four hours for contempt after applauding suffrage prisoners in court, and served it in the District Jail. Arrested again on January 27 at a watchfire demonstration, she was sentenced on January 28 to five days in the District Jail and joined the hunger strike there.
No discharge record has been found for either term. The sentences would nominally have ended on January 17 and February 2, but those are calculations rather than records and are not entered as release dates.
