Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer, 25, Palestinian foreign national, was indicted August 28, 1997 for plotting to detonate pipe bombs in the NYC subway in an attempted suicide attack to kill as many Jews as possible in protest of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Convicted; life without parole.
The FBI’s1999 annual report dates Abu Mezer’s jury conviction to July23,1998 and his life sentence to March1,1999.
An INS chronology submitted to the December 19, 2001 congressional hearing records Abu Mezer’s January 14, 1997 immigration arrest in Bellingham, Washington, followed by release on reduced bond before the separate July 31 arrest in New York. The January and July events were interrupted by release, rather than one continuous confinement.
