Biography

Fred West was a San Francisco representative of the California State Federation of Labor arrested with William Velarde and Jose Espinoza while driving through Fullerton during the 1936 Orange County orange strike. The July 20 Western Worker reports vagrancy charges and his release the preceding Wednesday night after Federation vice-president Walter Cowan flew south to post bail. Justice J. I. West reportedly conditioned release on his staying out of Orange County. Exact arrest and release days are not independently anchored by a dated dispatch, and no completed custody total is supplied. The page 6 Lomita report names Fred West as the AFL organizer attending an August 4 meeting to organize the harbor agricultural local into the AFL. This establishes a reported public organizing activity by the stated date, without an exact jail discharge day or a second custody case.
