Biography

Ernest Triefenstein was a U.S. Army prisoner and one of the Presidio 27. On October 14, 1968, twenty-seven prisoners at the Presidio Stockade in San Francisco staged a peaceful sit-down after a guard killed fellow prisoner Richard Bunch and amid protests over brutal and overcrowded conditions. The Army charged the participants with mutiny. A court-martial sentenced Triefenstein to 12 months at hard labor on June 6, 1969. On June 30, 1970, the Court of Military Review dismissed the mutiny conviction, found the lesser offense of willful disobedience, and reduced the confinement to 7 months at hard labor.
