Biography
Elliot “Smokey” Madison is a former social worker and member of the anarchist collective Curious George Brigade. During the September 2009 G-20 summit in Pittsburgh, he monitored a police scanner and relayed police movements through text messages and Twitter so demonstrators could avoid confrontation. Police arrested him in a Pittsburgh motel on September 24, and he was held in jail during the height of the protests before posting $30,000 bail. On October 1, the FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force raided his home at the Tortuga House collective in Queens. Pennsylvania prosecutors later dropped the state charges. The available reports establish jail confinement but do not give the exact date he posted bail.
Fire to the Prisons reprinted Tortuga House’s account that the two Pittsburgh arrestees were released after approximately thirty-six hours when bond was posted. The adjoining report identifies Madison and his $30,000 bond. This supplies a reported interval, rather than an exact discharge date.
