Biography

Eileen Rose was one of eleven-year-old twin sisters arrested on Oakland, California streets for selling the Communist newspaper Western Worker. The January 15, 1935 Daily Worker reports that Kathleen and Eileen were kept in jail for forty-eight hours rather than the Detention Home, and were released after the International Labor Defense demanded their freedom and challenged suppression of the workers' press. It gives no exact arrest or discharge day. Forty-eight hours is the reported duration, not a dated pair of endpoints. Labor Defender, March 1935, PDF page 26: In the twins’ first-person account, Eileen reports four hours locked in a foul toilet after the Oakland newspaper-selling arrest, followed by transfer to the Detention Home; ILD later obtained release. The article does not supply dated endpoints or the complete duration and differs in facility narrative from the earlier jail account, retained alongside it.
