Biography
Eddie Hatcher was a Tuscarora activist and member of Concerned Citizens for Better Government in Robeson County, North Carolina. On February 1, 1988, Hatcher and Timothy Jacobs occupied The Robesonian newspaper office and held employees for ten hours while demanding an investigation into official corruption and violence against Native and Black residents. A federal jury acquitted them, but North Carolina later prosecuted Hatcher for kidnapping. Arrested in San Francisco on March 10, 1989, he received an 18-year sentence and was paroled on May 3, 1995. He later returned to prison on an unrelated murder conviction and died in custody on May 1, 2009.
Nitassinan no. 39 reports that Hatcher was arrested and imprisoned on February 1, 1988, denied bail twice in February, and released on bail in early July 1988. It describes a subsequent September rearrest while he was returning for trial and his acquittal on all federal counts on October 14, 1988.
