Biography

Duane Grady was a Church of the Brethren minister, war-tax resister, and coordinator of the Iowa Peace Network. He and his wife, Beverly Weaver, served as pastors of Northview Church of the Brethren and redirected withheld federal income taxes to peace work. Grady entered Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha during the Feast of the Holy Innocents peace witness on December 28, 1981. The participants sought to deliver a message opposing preparations for nuclear war. Military authorities detained him for several hours, issued a barring letter, and released him that day.

Photograph provenance

The photograph shows Beverly Weaver and Duane Grady together at their church, as identified in the reproduced Indianapolis News caption. The original April 19, 1997 report names them as married co-pastors of Northview Church of the Brethren and describes their war-tax resistance and Iowa Peace Network support. The denomination's 1997 staff announcement independently links the same Grady to Northview and his previous Iowa Peace Network coordination. This establishes identity from documentary context, not facial comparison or a namesake search result. The source image is preserved in full without cropping, reconstruction or enhancement. It is a 1997 photograph, not a photograph of the 1981 detention. Photographer and reuse license have not been established. This photo update does not infer prison admission from his previously documented several-hour military detention.
