Biography

Dick Wilkerson was a Black man kidnapped and lynched near Manchester, Tennessee, on June 24, 1934. A June 25 dispatch says white men invaded a Black dance, then wrecked his home after an altercation. After the dance the gang seized Wilkerson and an unidentified Black man and drove them away; his mutilated body was found about fourteen miles southeast of Manchester. Sheriff C. D. Huffman admitted the destruction of his home. Eight suspects were held but not yet indicted. The explicit kidnapping establishes extrajudicial racial captivity; the second abducted man remains unidentified.
