Biography

B. D. Amis was secretary of the League of Struggle for Negro Rights and editor of The Liberator. Herndon identifies him as a speaker at the May 31, 1931 All-Southern Scottsboro Defense Conference in Chattanooga. After the conference, police arrested Amis, Robert Minor, Harry Haywood and Tom Wilson in the corridor for blocking traffic. They were released after paying ten-dollar fines. The memoir gives no measured custody duration or jail transfer, and does not expand Amis’s initials.
