Biography
Cornelius Smith was one of four Black Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees arrested after a racist attack at the Cohasset camp near Chico, California, in May 1935. White camp members attacked Black enrollees with bricks and clubs, and Smith and three other men were accused of assault with a deadly weapon after defending themselves. The charges were reduced to disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. They pleaded guilty and received suspended sentences.
