Biography

Chusei Teruya was an Okinawan gardener and labor activist. Yushi Yamazaki's 2020 study, printed p. 102 and notes 39–42, identifies him among nine Issei Communists arrested January 15, 1932 when the Los Angeles Red Squad and Long Beach police raided a Communist lecture on the economic crisis. The municipal judge dismissed the unlawful-assembly charges but handed eleven foreign-born defendants to immigration authorities. The ILD fought the deportations, and the Japanese defendants obtained permission for voluntary departure to the Soviet Union rather than Japan, raising their own fares. Exact detention endpoint and departure day are not printed. Source: https://dl.ndl.go.jp/view/prepareDownload?contentNo=1&itemId=info%3Andljp%2Fpid%2F11638381
