Biography
Charles King is a lawyer, minister and co-founder of Housing Works who became a leading advocate for homeless people living with HIV and AIDS. During New York demonstrations in the late 1990s and 2000, police repeatedly held King and other Housing Works activists overnight for minor protest offenses rather than issue appearance tickets. A 2001 civil settlement ended that city policy. The available court summary does not enumerate King’s individual arrest dates, so the separate overnight stays cannot yet be totaled exactly.
