Biography
William Allan, also reported as Billie or Billy Allen, was a Daily Worker correspondent, labor writer, and vice-chairman of the Michigan Communist Party. He was indicted in Detroit in September 1952, convicted under the Smith Act on February 19, 1954, and sentenced to four years and six months in prison and a $10,000 fine. Unable to furnish the increased appeal bond, he was taken to the Wayne County jail and transferred ten days later to the federal correctional institution at Milan. The government also pursued denaturalization in 1955. An appeals court ordered a new trial in 1958, and the government abandoned the prosecution.
