Biography

Helen Winter was a Detroit Communist Party organizer and the wife of imprisoned Smith Act defendant Carl Winter. Indicted in September 1952, she attended parts of her trial on a stretcher because of severe phlebitis. A jury convicted her on February 19, 1954, and the court sentenced her to four years in prison and a $10,000 fine. She remained free on her original $5,000 bond while appealing. An appeals court ordered a new trial in 1958, and the government abandoned the prosecution.
