Biography

Ben Ambrose was jailed with farm-labor organizer Frank Salas in Riverside County, California, in 1934. A November 12 report described the men as arrested during an orange-grove strike near San Bernardino and serving a one-year sentence. It also reported threats and mistreatment during a jail protest over food.

Labor Defender, April 1934: The Riverside article reports that Ambrose and Salas were arrested while arranging a meeting hall and initially received eighteen months each. It describes cash bail of $2,500 for each of six defendants and refusal to accept property bonds. The initial eighteen-month report is retained alongside the later one-year account; no claim that eighteen months was actually served is made.
