Biography

Basil Dell was named in the June22 LosAngeles dispatch about the previous night’s police raid on an unemployment-relief meeting in a private EastVernonAvenue home. All six were charged with criminal syndicalism. Basil was shot through the hip by squad leader PaulPhelps, taken to GeorgiaStreetHospital and arrested there. Exact discharge and complete custody are unknown. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1932/v09-n150-NY-jun-24-1932-DW-LOC.pdf#page=1

The June26 LosAngeles report confirms Dell shot during a private-home relief meeting and arrested in hospital. It now calls the shooting Wednesday night, conflicting with the earlier June22 dispatch’s previous-night chronology. Four unnamed co-arrestees were later arraigned for battery and resisting an officer; no individual charge is reassigned from this unnamed subset. The conflicting weekday is retained without overwriting the earlier dated arrest.

The Foster arrest report identifies Phelps as the officer who shot Dell and says the Plaza protest opposed that shooting and police suppression of meetings. It repeats Wednesday as the shooting weekday, preserved as a discrepancy with the earlier June22 dispatch; no exact date is overwritten.
