Contemporary report and limits

August Rodin was an immigration detainee held at Angel Island in 1932. A contemporary newspaper reports six months of detention before he and two other participants in a hunger strike were transferred to Alameda County Jail as punishment. The protest concerned inadequate food; his exact admission, transfer and release dates and ultimate deportation outcome remain unknown.

The Western Worker of September 1, 1932 reports that seventy Angel Island detainees began a hunger strike Wednesday, August 10, demanding adequate food and clean utensils. The paper says these demands brought better food. It individually names August Rodin as held for deportation for six months and transferred, with two others, to Alameda County Jail as punishment for participating. The six-month description is reported actual detention by this point, not an imposed criminal sentence or an exact day count. No transfer day is printed, and August 10 dates the group strike, not his original admission. No birth date, nationality, political membership, conviction, eventual discharge or completed foreign removal is inferred. This source-specific person is not linked to the unrelated sculptor Auguste Rodin.
