Biography
Arthur McPhaul was a Black Detroit labor and civil-rights activist and former executive secretary of the Michigan Civil Rights Congress. He was convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to surrender the organization’s records to the House Un-American Activities Committee. After the Supreme Court upheld the conviction in 1960, McPhaul served more than seven months of a nine-month sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Milan, Michigan. The available reports do not give his exact admission and release days.
