The MOVE Nine were convicted following the August 8, 1978 confrontation in Philadelphia in which police officer James Ramp was killed. Each received a sentence of 30 to 100 years.
Two members, Merle Africa and Phil Africa, died in prison. The seven surviving members were released on parole between 2018 and 2020, after roughly four decades in custody.
Delbert Africa died in June 2020, several months after his release. Charles “Chuck” Sims Africa, the last of the nine to be paroled, died on September 20, 2021, after cancer that had been diagnosed in prison.
