Relocation toward Mississippi Organizing

In the late 1960s and early 1970s the RNA shifted its focus toward the Deep South, and especially Mississippi, which it claimed as the territorial heart of the proposed nation of New Afrika. The organization sought to purchase land, build settlements, and organize among rural Black Southerners, attempting to give concrete form to its claim of national sovereignty.

In 1971 the provisional government relocated its capital to Mississippi and acquired farmland near Jackson for a projected capital city, "El Malik." This move into the Deep South — the region where the RNA claimed a nation — brought it into direct collision with Mississippi authorities and the FBI.
