Biography

Zenkichi Morita was an Issei shipping-port truck driver living in Eleele, Kauai, and a prewar member of the International Longshoremen and Warehousemen Union. JCCH documents detention at Wailua County Jail and Sand Island, March 1943 mainland transfer, Sharp Park March-August 1943 and Santa Fe August 1943-October 1945. He returned to Honolulu aboard Yarmouth in November 1945. His case forms part of US wartime civilian incarceration of Hawaii residents of Japanese ancestry. Union membership is documented context, not proof of the individual reason for detention; the archive does not establish an arrest date or criminal conviction.
