Biography

William Meyer was a disabled Unemployed Council leader in Mineola, Long Island. The November 12, 1934 Daily Worker reports that he was beaten and arrested while resisting eviction, sentenced to sixty days in Nassau County Jail and denied visits and newspapers in solitary confinement because of his political affiliation. International Labor Defense attorney Louis Fleischer obtained his release on a writ of habeas corpus on Thursday, November 8. The issue also spells the surname Meyers. The sixty days were imposed punishment; the source does not establish how much was actually served.
