Biography

William Hamilton Martin was a National Security Agency cryptologist who defected with his colleague Bernon Mitchell in 1960. The two traveled to Mexico and Cuba before appearing in Moscow in September. At a Soviet press conference they denounced U.S. electronic surveillance of allies and neutral countries and criticized American reconnaissance flights and military incursions. The United States later indicted them for disclosing classified information, but no pending prosecution has been found before their departure. Martin received Soviet citizenship, became dissatisfied with life there, and moved to Mexico in the 1960s.
