Biography

William Cowart was a U.S. Army corporal from Dalton, Georgia, and one of 21 American Korean War prisoners who refused repatriation. He crossed into China on February 24, 1954 and was assigned to a collective farm with Otho Bell and Lewis Griggs. They returned together in July 1955, were arrested and then released because their dishonorable discharges had ended military jurisdiction. The three later won a Supreme Court case for back pay owed through the date of discharge.
