Biography

Pages 4–5 identify Walter Saupe, nineteen, an anti-Nazi refugee who left the Reliance in New York harbor in October 1935 after threats for refusing the swastika salute on return to Germany. An immigration inspector arrested him without warrant February 17, 1936 and took him to Ellis Island for allegedly illegal presence. He was later released on a $500 bond. Page 4 forecasts a Harding departure July 22, but page 5 orders Ellis Island surrender June 21 and President Harding departure June 24. These conflicting forecasts do not prove actual surrender or completed deportation. The Committee for Protection of Foreign Born sought asylum and protests to Frances Perkins.
