Biography

Viola Salgado helped found Chicago’s West Town Community Law Office and volunteered as an office manager and paralegal. A Puerto Rican independence supporter, she was jailed July 3–7, 1986 in an alleged prison-escape conspiracy case, then released on bond.

Libertad’s August 1986 report individually names Salgado, Jaime Delgado and Dora García-López, gives their July 3 arrests and July 7 bond releases, and reports four days in solitary confinement at Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center. The alleged conspiracy and criticism of detention remain attributed to that contemporary account. Breakthrough’s Fall 1987 report separately names her arrest and says she was not included in the subsequent indictment. No later subpoena is counted as additional imprisonment.
