Biography

Vincent Padula was a thirty-two-year-old Italian laborer whose deportation was stopped on Saturday, August 22, 1936 by a habeas corpus writ served on the Conte di Savoia’s captain fifteen minutes before sailing. He said he entered legally April 27, 1921 and had made only a fourteen-hour Montreal excursion in 1926; the Labor Department treated 1926 as his entry and relied on a 1928 offense for which he had served fifteen months. He was also pursuing compensation for an eye lost in a New York state-prison blacksmith shop. The immigration detention is recorded separately from that earlier ordinary conviction; no actual overseas removal is inferred. Daily Worker, August 26, 1936, page 4.
