Biography
Vesper Romero, a child of Tampa cigar worker Mama (Frances) Romero, was arrested at age 14 during the November 7, 1931 crackdown on the Labor Temple Russian Revolution anniversary meeting. Joseph Freeman’s account describes the child as running to alert other workers to the police attack and says the family was taken to city jail. No individual charge, disposition, physical release or completed duration is supplied. The age is the report’s retrospective age at arrest, not a verified birth date. Freeman's page 7 continuation explicitly reports that sixteen-year-old Yorkina and fourteen-year-old Vesper spent twenty-four hours in jail and were released after a juvenile-court worker intervened. They were among seventeen transferred from city to county custody after the November 7, 1931 Labor Temple arrests; their mother and oldest sister remained confined. This establishes one day actually held in this episode, without assigning the mother's longer sentence. Yorkina later testified for her mother; the judge rejected her evidence after she affirmed without belief in God. That courtroom dispute is not another arrest.
