Biography
Vernon Bellecourt (WaBun-Inini, 1931–2007), an Anishinaabe leader of the American Indian Movement, was jailed on September 14, 1988 for civil contempt after refusing to cooperate with the Operation Friendly Skies federal grand jury. The reported order authorized confinement for up to 18 months or until the grand jury expired; it does not establish that he actually served 18 months. The official federal locator records November 10, 1988 as the end of BOP custody; that date does not establish the end of all possible other custody or supervision.
