Biography

Ulyses B. Hooks Jr. was an Oklahoma prisoner writing from McLeod Honor Farm in Farris under prisoner number 85690. In a letter published in February 1974, he described himself as a political prisoner and said he had filed a civil action against the state corrections director and the Oklahoma State Penitentiary warden over cruel and unusual punishment following the July 1973 prison rebellion. He sought legal assistance and outside correspondence, expressing fear for his safety. These are his attributed statements; the letter does not identify the original conviction, the specific punishment dates, a final court ruling, or a release date. The printed spelling Ulyses is retained.
