Biography

Tom (Terumi) Hide was removed with his family from Wapato, Washington, to the North Portland Assembly Center and then incarcerated at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, during the US wartime removal of Japanese Americans. Washington State University Libraries dates his Heart Mountain incarceration to 1942-1944. He graduated from the camp high school in 1944 and subsequently attended Washington State College. His family also worked in Lyman, Nebraska, on assigned farm labor. This was administrative wartime incarceration, not a documented criminal conviction. His later college attendance and postwar life establish that this custody ended; its exact ending day is unverified.
