Biography

Tom Holmes was one of six defendants prosecuted for picketing the Empire Cafeteria at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue, Harlem, in protest against discrimination against Black workers. The Daily Worker of September 8, 1934, page 3, reports that Magistrate Aurelio ordered the six held for Special Sessions on September 6 on unlawful-assembly charges, and that all had been released on bail. The newspaper criticizes the prosecution’s evidence; its accusations are attributed advocacy. The exact arrest and physical bail-release days, verdict and sentence are not supplied. The issue does not establish identity with the existing Pennsylvania Young Communist League organizer Thomas Holmes.
